R2R UPDATE...AMAZING THINGS!!!

As we draw near the date of the Run 2 Remember, one thing is apparent to those that are prepping and planning this fundraiser...people are amazing! As you probably know, last year this was a 1 man run for 100 miles to show remembrance to Coasties that were killed in the line of duty since 9-11. This year, it has grown to a size that:

1. Is completely representative of the respect the USCG has for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and
2. Unlike anything that myself and others have seen as an organized CG Memorial Fundraiser.

I did some digging around for past events and fundraisers and I think that the 2nd Annual Run 2 Remember has set a new precedence within the service. This run has transformed from an event in the Keys 100 into a global campaign, with Coast Guard men and women all joining together from Hawaii to Kuwait in honor of our fallen.

On A Personal Note...

Run 2 Remember Participants, & Families of our Fallen Heroes,

I just want to take a minute of your time and express my gratitude for all of you that are planning on participating in the Run 2 Remember on May 18th and 19th, either in the Keys 100 or in your local community. Last year I had the honor of helping LT. Bruns get the word out about his goal to run 100 miles on his own and raise money for the CG Foundations Fallen Heroes Scholarship fund. This year, thanks to the hard work of LT Love, the 2nd Annual Run 2 Remember has grown beyond what any of us could have imagined. As of writing this, we are expecting over 72 runners in the Keys 100, with each runner representing an individual Coastguardsman that was lost.  As if that alone were not enough, more of you showed your support by organizing runs on May 18th and 19th at your base, sector, district, and headquarters.

This tremendous amount  of support is not shocking or unexpected, but it's a representation of a small service and each individuals adherence to the core values that we represent. Honor. Respect. Devotion to Duty. Sometimes our lives get busy and we all take things for granted, but it's the resolve and spirit that you all are showing that represent each of the three values. Honoring those that came before us and gave their lives in service to this nation. Respect for who they were, what they stood for, the families they left behind, and the friends who's lives they changed. Devotion to Duty by never forgetting that overall, it's not about us, it's about those who have sacrificed and our mission to make sure that the future of this service will remember their names.

Each morning when we attend colors, put on the uniform, and go out to do the mission, we are carrying on the core values of not only the Coast Guard, but the core values of the fallen shipmates who lead before us. This run is more than a memorial, it's a remembrance. It serves to remind us of those who we have lost.

To LT. Bruns, your initial vision and drive to honor the fallen has grown from a one man event into a national remembrance. Without out your selfless actions, this event would not exist. You should be proud of what you have started. Thank you.

To the Miami CPO's, the t-shirt concept took an event and turned it into a mission. What was originally planned as a run to honor the fallen was multiplied by your actions and turned it into so much more. You helped fuel a fundraiser to support the families of those we honor. Thank you.

To LT. Lucy Love, you have taken Mr. Bruns vision and transformed it into a movement. Your dedication to this evolution has been the key in taking a one man run and turning it into what could be a participation level of over hundreds of people. You were determined to continue the Run 2 Remember and without that drive, we would have not seen the participation levels, coverage, and success that we have now. Thank you.

For those running, walking, or biking, I simply say thank you. You are not only taking part in a fundraiser to support the families of fallen shipmates, you are also carrying the memory and legacy of our service. As each of you take part in this Run to Remember, keep in thought the names of those we lost, the missions they conducted, and the sacrifices made. You are representing them, you are displaying their heroism, and you are making sure that everyone remembers their sacrifice. We will always remember.

To the families of the fallen members, we know that nothing will ever ease the pain you have from losing a loved one, but you need to know that every member of the Coast Guard is with you, thanks you, and ensures that your sacrifice will always be remembered. I hope that you can find some comfort in the fact that we will not ever forget them and what they sacrificed for. Our uniforms all have our names on the right side, but bears the words US Coast Guard on the left...and that makes us all family. We will always remember our family.

I wish all of you the best of luck and I thank you for the support.

Sincerely,

MK1 Sean Lawler, USCG.

For Those Inquiring About Memorial Bracelets...

There have been several requests for people asking about getting memorial bracelets with a fallen Coastie's name on it, both for the run and daily remembrance. This is something that we looked into here and we came to the conclusion that the cost is way to high for us to be able to offer bracelets due to the wide range on names people are requesting. However, getting some for yourselves in fairly cost efficient. Here are some options:

1. The traditional Metal Memorial bracelet. These are commonly used with the KIA/POW/MIA style. It is a metal band with a service members name, unit, operation, and date lost. The information is engraved or laser etched into the metal.

The cost for these are fairly high unless your doing a bulk order of 50 or more. At 50, you can expect to pay roughly $10 each...plus any set up fees.

We recommend that you check out Recognition Services Inc for pricing.

2. A easier and more affordable option are the silicone bracelets which are similar to the yellow Livestrong bracelets. They are fairly durable, inexpensive, and you can order just 1. You can get them printed with whatever name or message you choose. The most common is a "debossed" style, where the text looks stamped into the bracelet. On average, most companies charge about $3.00 for a single bracelet. You can also choose colors and even a logo. The best way to find a company to make them is to google "custom silicone wristbands". In the past we have used Wristbands with a Message and 24hrWristbands. Both were easy to use and fast.

If you looking for members names, dates lost, or unit assigned, you can find that information at the following links:

Good luck and let us know if you get any and want to offer them to others. we can figure out a way to get them up on this site.

CG R2R TShirt Fundraiser

Last year we helped out with the Run 2 Remember fundraiser. This year we aim to do the same. We had shirts last year...and we do again this year! We will be taking pre-orders until March 29th and ship shortly after that, around mid-april. . T-shirts will start at $20. Shipping is $5 for the first shirt and increases slightly as you add more.
The Miami CPOA fronted the cost for the shirts last year, with all proceeds going to the Coast Guard Foundations Fallen Heros Scholarship fund. This year the goal of the shirt fundraiser is the same. Due to certain regulations of how the CPOA can use their accounts, they are unable to offer individual sales online through paypal.

Bring the Run 2 Remember to Your Community

60 people will be running 100 miles in honor of Coast Guardsmen killed in the line of duty on May 19th and 20th. While these men and women will be making the long trek from Key Largo to Key West over those two days, there is a way that you can join the remembrance in your local community.

The Keys 100 race (which will host the CG Run 2 Remember) starts at 0600 on Saturday, May 19th and continues into Sunday evening. During that time you can choose a fallen member that held a place in your life, workplace, or memory and simply run, walk, or bike in their honor. Make a sign, wave a flag, get your friends to join. Either way, make your own Run 2 Remember in your community. Myself, and 5 friends are each running a mile on the 19th for 5 Coasties that we knew and choose to honor: ME3 Lin, DC3 Bruckenthal, PS3 Gill, BM2 Duque, and LT Hill. We can't make it to the Keys, but we can show our support and honor them in the same way...and so can you!

Grab some folks from your unit and hit the pavement in remembrance. Now, here is the most important part: SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE! If you plan on joining in, tell us who you are running for. When you run, get  a picture of your Run 2 Remember and share it on facebook. If you want to organize something in your area, use our FB page to reach out for additional people in your area. Consider this a community drive!

We look forward to hearing from you and your plans to join in.

2nd Annual CG Run 2 Remember T-Shirt

Last year LT Brian Bruns started a memorial run to raise money for the CG Foundation's Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund. He joined the KEYS 100, a massive run that last 2 days and 100 miles. Making the run on his own, he ran in honor of Coasties killed in action since 9/11/2001.

This year will be the 2nd Annual Run 2 Remember. LT. Lucy Love has spearheaded a massive transformation this year. Instead of one runner, there will be 8 six-person teams running a series of 2 mile relays. Each runner will represent one of the 48 Coast Guardsman killed in action since 1992. The "SCORE" of this run marks the last 20 years and honors those we lost during that time.  Like last year, t-shirts will be available as a means to raise money for the CG Foundation's Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund. For more information on this event, head over to their facebook page.
